Skills for Volunteering in Gambia

¿Qué necesitas (además de ganas) para aprovechar al máximo tu experiencia?

Volunteering in Gambia isn’t just about helping—it’s a journey of personal growth, cultural exchange, and human connection. But beyond your good intentions, there are certain skills that can make a real difference in how you contribute and how deeply you experience it all. Here are some key skills to pack before your trip (or to start building now!).

Active listening and empathy

At the school, you’re not there to “teach”—you’re there to connect and share.

Understanding the people you’ll live and work with—teachers, children, families—starts with listening. Empathy is the foundation of real connection.
Be present, be open, and listen with your heart.

Adaptability

You’ll be stepping into a different continent, language, culture, and rhythm of life. Nothing works exactly the way you’re used to—and that’s the beauty of it. Learning to adapt to change and uncertainty will be essential.
Flexibility will help you enjoy the experience without frustration.

Initiative

Got ideas? See something that could be improved? Great! The school team values people who step up and offer help. Just remember: you’re here to support, not to lead.
Take initiative, but always stay grounded in respect, humility, and collaboration.
Let us know your ideas through our email realgambiaexperience@gmail.com. We will love to listen to them

Patience and sense of humor

Children can be unpredictable. Lessons can feel chaotic. Plans may change. It’s all part of the experience. A smile, a joke, or a deep breath can go a long way.
Patience and humor are your best allies, both inside and outside the classroom.

Cross-cultural communication

In The Gambia, there are more than 8 local languages, and many children are hearing English for the first time. Communication will need to be simple, clear, visual, and kind.
Sometimes, your body language, tone, and openness will matter just as much as your words.

Teamwork

You’ll be joining a local team with its own way of doing things. Knowing how to collaborate, ask for help, and trust the people already doing the work will make your contribution far more effective—and your experience far more enriching.
We are all part of the same team.

A willingness to learn

You’re coming to help—but you’ll also receive so much more in return. You’ll learn about education, African culture, real-world cooperation, and yourself. The more open you are, the more powerful this journey will be.
Come with the desire to enjoy yourself, and you will learn along the way.

Best of all? These skills won’t just help you in Gambia—they’ll stay with you for life.
